India From Top to Bottom 2005: From Kannyikumari to Kashmir
South India - Page 23
The Stanunatha Temple in the little village of Suchindram, 14 km north of Kanniyakumari. This is the tower above the main entrance, and is made of crushed seashells and milk! |
The Stanunatha Temple is one of the most beautiful temples I've seen, with
musical stone pillars, a large 800-year old Nandi bull made of seashell dust
and milk, a large Ganesha statue made of black stone, a 15-ft high Hanuman
monkey god statue carved from a single stone, gorgeous reliefs and pillars,
and bronze oil lamps hanging from the ceiling, illuminating the interior
with a lovely buttery glow. ~~~~ Sunset at Suchindram above paddy fields. |
