Cactus in the black volcanic ash in the Valle de las Volcanes in the remote Andes Mountains. |
Valle de los Volcanes. Along with Monasterio Misterioso in Arequipa, this was one of the main reasons for my return to Peru. The 65 km long valley is littered with volcano cones and craters, one of which we managed to climb. |
Nazca, north of Arequipa and
near the Pacific coast. Our pilot prepares for take off
to fly over the Nazca Lines, huge geometric designs drawn
in teh desert. The lines were created simply by removing
the darker sun-baked stones from the surface of the
desert and piling them up on either side of the lines,
thus exposing the lighter colored gypsum-based soil
below. No one knows who exactly created these lines -- or
why, although many theories, from the ridiculous to the
reasonable, abound. However, I believe that any
reasonable person can see that they are UFO landing
strips.
