The Laguna de Salinas in all its otherworldly beauty. We were the only people there on this particular day, and literally had the whole lagoon to ourselves. We got here by public bus, and needed to make a special request to be dropped off at the lagoon. After several hours of exploring, we flagged down another bus to take us back to Arequipa. We road in the cab of the bus the entire way while talking to the driver and his entourage. |
The little pueblo of
Andagua, a long, bumpy 12-hour bus ride outside of
Arequipa. Andagua is close to the incredible Valle de las
Volcanes, an unusual valley covered with scores of small
and medium-sized vocanic cones and craters -- a veritable
moonscape. Like the Laguna de Salinas, it is seldom
visited. We were in Andagua for four days, and only saw
one other traveler. We met these laborers while hiking towards the Valle de las Volcanes. Simin is third from the right, illustrating that it is possible for tourists to obtain employment in Peru if one knows where to look. |
