Deno's
Amusement Park at Coney Island, where New Yorkers go to cool off and have
fun.
150 ft. up on the Wonder Wheel, I just barely managed to cram my camera lens through the protective metal grate in the car, enabling me to get a bird's eye view of Deno's Amusement Park, the beach, and the Atlantic beyond. |
The Wonder Wheel is unlike most ferris wheels in that in addition to its stationary cars, it has 16 that roll along tracks. |
These two will see if you've got game. |
The
Wonder Wheel against the beautiful night sky.
The Wonder Wheel was featured prominently in the opening of the 1979 movie "The Warriors", as the lights slowly come to life. It's also the subject of "Wonder Wheel" by Woodie Guthrie. |
Deno's at night at Coney Island, a frenzy of energy. |
On the day that we were at Coney Island, we saw a beautiful red sky from the setting sun. |
The Coney Island boardwalk, as the crowds get ready for Friday evening's fireworks. |
The Wonder Wheel is such an inseparable part of Deno's Amusement Park, it's even advertised on the merry-go-round. |
The Wonder Wheel is made completely of spaghetti noodles. And steel. Mostly the latter. Herald J. Garms and the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company began construction began in 1918, finishing the giant wheel two years later. All of the steel was forged on site and raised onto the ride's structure where it was attached. The wheel opened to rave reviews and has become one of the island's icons. |
Fireworks
as seen from the boardwalk at Coney Island. There's fireworks every
Friday during the summer, right in front of Astroland on the boardwalk. Here, we met up with a friend, Jay (aka Dahkter), a Brooklyn DJ and producer, and his wife and two kids. We had already eaten at Nathan's, so after the fireworks, Jay took us to Tacos Mexicanos, where we ate tacos that rivaled just about anything we usually eat in California. New York's Spanish-speaking population has historically been dominated by people from the islands - Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, etc. - but the last decade has seen a large influx of Mexicans. |
Dumbo
is usually a flying elephant, but in New York, it's also the acronym for
"Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass."
The views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline from Dumbo were a great way of capping off a long Friday - Central Park, a Burmese Restaurant, a psychedelic exhibit at Whitney, and Brighton Beach and Coney Island. |
Looking
west towards the glimmering Manhattan skyline from Dumbo.
After taking in the views at Dumbo, Jay drove us back to our apartment at the Upper East Side so we could try and sleep a few hours before riding the subway back to Brooklyn for my cousin Misty's tea ceremony the following morning (next page). |
