24 June 2016, continued: Gullfoss. Beautiful waterfall, right? Well, count yourself lucky that you can actually see it in all its beauty. You can thank Sigríður Tómasdóttir. She's the badass that saved it for you and for me. You see, foreign investors wanted to turn this into a hydroelectric plant, which would have obviously destroyed the waterfall forever. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland, in part because of its close proximity to Reykjavik. Package tourists and those doing just a quick stopover in Iceland on the way to somewhere else often take these bus tours to the areas near Reykjavik. This is one of those spots, the crowds reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the United States (thankfully, they're not that large, but it's still very crowded). 1/8 f/11 ISO 100. |
25 June 2016: This was the last day that I had the rental car. I went to Krysuvik, Reykjanes Peninsula, not far from Reykjavik. Lake Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula, and the third-largest lake of southern Iceland, 9.1 km². It is also one of the country's deepest lakes, at 97 metres. And it also has these lovely lupines. |

Reykjanes Peninsula, Krysuvik area, looking at a geothermal river. And yes, it really is that color blue, looking like thick viscous paint even though it is really hot spring water. |

Someone in the fishing town of Grindavik had a Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan issue basketball hoop, and I couldn't resist taking a photo of it. The Southern Peninsula. |

Grindavik on the Southern Peninsula. I took a photo of this in case we, as The Mercury Seven, can use this image, or a severely tweaked version of it if appropriate, for one of our upcoming albums someday. Who knows? |

I took a photo of this in case we, as The Mercury Seven, can use this image, or a severely tweaked version of it if appropriate, for one of our upcoming albums someday. Who knows? I was near the end of having the rental car. I drove back to Reykavik and returned the car, then wandered around town. |
An attractive house with carved wooden shutters on the streets of Reykjavik. Taken with iPhone while walking around the town, one of my favorite cities. 26 June 2016. I also went to Laugardalslaug on Sndlaugarvegur, a series of swimming pools and geothermal pools that were incredible. I walked over there in the morning, planning on just spending an hour there, and to my surprise, was there for three hours. Very relaxing and amazing, light water. |
27 June 2016: The frozen Hudson Bay on my return trip. My return trip was booked through the frequent flier miles with United Air. Like the beginning, I had a convoluted route back. On the first stop, in Berlin, Germany, Eurowings, a United affiliate, ran late and I could not catch my next flight. They also lost my luggage. This luggage, despite my best efforts, would be lost for three weeks. A really magical trip. Thanks for coming along on this virtual tour with me. And thank you to my Dad for making this trip happen, Lance and friends for being such great travel companions, and to Mats and Marie for making me feel at home in Stockholm and helping out!

I leave you with some of the images stuck with me throughout the trip. This photo of an Icelandic horse is featured in the Summer Reader Issue of the Los Angeles Times, both the print and digital version! |
