If you go by how many photos I've taken of him, Sonam is clearly my favorite Tibetan subject.  He made another appearance at a Tibetan event, this time Tibetan Uprising Day, on the 10th of March 2011.

Tibetan Uprising Day commemorates the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the presence of the People's Republic of China in Tibet.  The failure of the armed rebellion ultimately resulted in a violent crackdown on Tibetan independence movements, and the flight of the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso into exile.

Usually, when I do these photo blogs, I go for certain look or consistency in the photos.  Here, however, I've decided to just let each photo do its thing and have its own universe.

Flags of Tibet and the United States wave proudly, with the setting son illuminating Federal Building in Westwood as its backdrop.

Sonam says hi to me again.

I like the challenge of trying to find a new angle or to say something new with the photographs after so many years of photographing Tibetan Uprising Day or other Tibetan protests for The Tibet Connection or Los Angeles Friends of Tibet.

Two monks, two flags, one dream.

That's kinda poetic, no?

The Chinese Democracy people joined the Tibetans in solidarity, with this man telling of the atrocities against his family at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.

Chinese people for democracy joined the Tibetans.  Their blog is http://www.thetiananmen.blogspot.com/.

I was happy to see them showing up, and felt it would be great to do more joint events in the future, along with the people from East Turkestan.

Pema and others hold a candlelight vigil for Tibetans in commemoration of Tibetan Uprising Day.

Candlelight vigil by the Federal Building in Westwood in commemoration of Tibetan Uprising Day.  Last year, Tibetan Uprising Day was held in front of the Chinese Consulate.  This year, back to the usual spot, where there were many cars driving past, honking their support.  Each year, I hope that the situation in Tibet improves and Tibetans stop being killed, persecuted, wrongfully imprisoned, or "disappeared" at the hands of the Chinese government.

Geek stuff:  Nikon D90, Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens, all photos handheld.  Six photographers from The Street Photography group from meetup.com showed up.
