The Smell, Los Angeles - Ten Year Anniversary, 4 Jan 2007
Damion Romero and Scarnella (Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline)
Damion Romero and his billows of electronic drone. |
Nels Cline, half of Scarnella and easily one the most versatile, gifted and musically sensitive guitarists, ready to perform at the ten year anniversary of The Smell with Carla Bozulich. |
Carla
Bozulich taking the cool stuff to her guitar pickups. As well as a gifted sound artist, Carla also is one of the most emotionally potent singers I've ever heard sing. I saw her perform in L.A. at the end of her Red Headed Stranger tour a few years ago (with Nels). Her voice had such a mournful fragility, making me ache but feel alive inside. The interpretation of Willie Nelson's songs were magical. |
Nels
at The Smell. I performed with an experimental improvisational ensemble with Mitchell Brown at the PCH Club years ago on the same bill with Scarnella. |
Manipulating the sound. I'm not sure why I like this photo so much. Nels is crouching, there's a table blocking half of him, but I can hear the sound when I look at this photo. |
