Monday night, 14 July 2014, continued:The oldest forest in the world. Many of these trees live for 5000 years, and even after dying, can remain for 5000 more years, remaining. In other words, it's quite possible that some trees have been standing for as long as 10000 years, long long before George Burns roamed the earth. :D

I really really really love the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. At 11000 feet/3350 m in elevation, you can see a lot of stars, the Milky Way, seemingly much of the universe. But even when it's cloudy, such as in this photo, it's utterly magical.

Star trails over the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. For this and many of the other photos, the clouds moved in fast, obscuring much of the stars. However, I was still able to get star trails, although I generally refer to this as a "cloud trail" shot.

This was taken 2014-07-14 at 22:12. 27 minutes total. Each individual photo was 3 minutes f/6.3, ISO 800 and was later stacked using Photoshop CS34. I used a Nikon D7000 and a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens with Triggertrap. (8441)

I was traveling with two cameras, my old trusty Nikon D7000, and the new full frame Nikon D610.

The D7000 is a good camera, so I took it not only as a back-up, but also to photograph star trails and long exposure photos. I would sometimes leave the D7000 clicking away while taking photos with the other camera.

This is a long exposure photo of over 18 minutes showing the celestial movements of the night sky, taken at an elevation of 11000 ft./3350 m. The gorgeous night sky, largely free from light pollution, as seen from the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Up, up, up in the White Mountains of California exist a forest of trees that have flourished in the face of high, arid conditions at 11000 feet/3350 m in altitude. Many of these trees live for 5000 years, and even after dying, can remain for 5000 more years, remaining. In other words, it's quite possible that some trees have been standing for as long as 10000 years, long long before Lucille Ball roamed the earth. :D It was cloudy when I took this set of photos, giving a slightly more eerie, surreal sort of feel in many of the images. I hope you enjoy them!

I love this tree.

But another thing I remember about photographing this tree is the slippery shale-like rock underneath it, which occasionally made footing, traipsing around in the dark, and balancing the tripod a little more challenging.

I drove back down the hill to lower elevations. It may have been past 3:00 in the morning, but I had some more photography to do.

The cloudy but beautiful night sky whooshing over the CARMA dish telescopes, located relatively close to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. I like how the moon peaks out of the clouds here! I photographed this on my way back from Gold Point ghost town in Nevada. ~~~
A long exposure night sky photo, with the moon peaking through the streaking clouds at around 4 am. The amazing science fiction structures in the foreground are the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), a multi-university-based interferometer, using 23 radio telescopes used jointly to image the astronomical universe at millimeter wavelengths, producing high-resolution astronomical images. CARMA is located in the Inyo Mountains in California, USA. I was there for about one hour photographing the dish arrays, and was photographed with a Nikon D610 DSLR. Special thanks to Dennis Ducilla for telling me about CARMA.

A long exposure night sky photo. I believe this is looking more or less west, catching the moon arcing toward the Sierra Nevadas (not visible here). I love the night sky when it is cloudy, although here, I was a bit concerned that it was too cloudy, so I paid special attention to where the clouds were drifting so I could pre-visualize the patterns they would make. I was quite aware of the clouds drifting toward the east, and knew it would bracket the foreground structures nicely. I chose to go B&W with this to emphasize a more 1950s sci-fi sort of feel.

And what are those structures exactly anyway?

Well, I'm glad you asked.
