I stacked this image, creating star trails just shy of four hours. I used Triggertrap to control my D7000. I forgot to put it on airplane mode or I would have gotten more than four hours. Oh well.

The D7000 is a good camera, so I took it not only as a back-up, but also to photograph star trails and long exposure photos. I would sometimes leave the D7000 clicking away while taking photos with the other camera.

Outside the historic mining town of Goldfield, NV, in a desert dotted by Joshua Trees, you can see a field of old cars that are wildly painted and jammed into the ground at unlikely angles. This is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, created by Michael "Mark" Rippie and painted by Chad Sorg. In July 2014, I stayed in Goldfield and created night photos with light painting to enhance the bold colors of the painted cars even more. Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and on this particular night, I got fairly clear skies. A gifted light painting photographer named Ron PInkerton was also there for the entire evening, and we had a fun evening photographing this surreal location.

With a nod of gratitude to Troy Paiva and Lance Keimig, two photographers who largely pioneered this sort of light painting approach.. I don't do this sort of light painting often, but their two books definitely had an influence on this photo.

Saturday 12 July 2014:
This is the shop behind the post office of the ghost town of Gold Point. An evocative ghost town from yesteryear in the Nevada Desert, Gold Point, formerly Lime Point and Hornsilver before the name change to reflect mining for gold, is a well-preserved ghost town run by Herb Robbins. I stayed here for two nights, photographing the town, enjoying the beauty, and eating delicious food that Herb and Sandy serve. I loved this experience, and hope to return someday. These ghost towns and mines are a part of our rich history, and I am fascinated by the stories they still have left to tell. And these voices seem to whisper a bit more at night. (3270)

The mysteries of a Nevada ghost town come to life at night. I "light painted" this old mining structure with flashlights with gels at night, lighting up the interior with a blue gel. All the color work on both the interior and exterior of the structure was done during the 236 second exposure, and is not a Photoshop creation. You can see the movement of the stars from the long exposure.

Underneath the Nevada desert night sky, are ghosts still working the late night shift in the iron workshop? An evocative ghost town from yesteryear in the Nevada Desert, Gold Point, formerly Lime Point and Hornsilver before the name change to reflect mining for gold, is a well-preserved ghost town run by Herb Robbins. I believe this iron workshop was built by the Great Western Mine Company. I initially saw it, perched up on a hill, overlooking the expansive desert, and knew I had to photograph this. I lit the interior with a speedlight with a red gel to give the feeling of someone still working long nights. It took quite a number of tries to get this just the way I wanted it to feel. All colored light work was done during the exposure, and is not a Photoshop creation. I stayed here for two nights, photographing the town, enjoying the beauty, and eating delicious food that Herb and Sandy serve. I loved this experience, and hope to return someday. Herb's firetrucks, Gold Point, NV. This is a 154 second exposure taken 2014-07-13 at 02:34 in the morning, f/8, ISO 200. (3357)

After eating another delicious meal at Herb and Sandy's, I set out on a ten-mile drive along a dirt road to the Hard Luck Castle, named after the mine, which operated from 1897 to WWII.

We'll let Randy Johnston's Hard Luck Castle website take it from here:
The 40 acres that comprise the Hard Luck Mine and its neighboring Emerson claim were purchased by the current owner Randy Johnston in 1998, and by the year 2000 Randy Johnston began building the Hard Luck Castle.

The four-story, 8,000 square foot fortress has 16-inch walls and was built with 24,000 bricks, over 1000 yards of concrete, and more than seven tons of rebar. The mostly circular citadel is entirely powered by wind and solar, with redundant back-up generators. The estate has a theater and casino game room, auto and wood shops, four bedrooms and three full baths, two kitchens, and a great room with two working pipe organs. Mr. Johnston offers guided tours of the castle and shares his thoughts and dreams of building in the desert.

This remote property is surrounded by thousands of acres of BLM land. Remote, desolate, secluded, private - all describe the Hard Luck Mine Castle. Nearly thirteen years of construction have gone into the building of this Gothic style Castle. With the help of friends, Mr. Johnstons has created a Castle that mirrors that of Death Valley Scotty's Castle (20 miles away). The Castle foundation is 50 feet in diameter and consists of 65 yards of special concrete and the footings are on solid rock - this fortress is not going anywhere soon. There are about 24,000 concrete blocks in the 16 inch thick walls.

My car, cruising along the dirt road on the way from Gold Point ghost town to the Hard Luck Castle.

Along the dirt road on the way to the Hard Luck Castle, looking north past the Joshua Trees.

This is just before the very very steep downhill, looking down at the valley below, where Route 95 runs. The Hard Luck Castle is about 3 and a half hours north of Las Vegas.
