Continued from Page One:
If you're coming from the other page, yes, you just saw this. But I get a lot of people who get whisked to one page, so I'll just leave this here.

A man from the Gujurat region of India by way of the Bay Area contemplates Delicate Arch underneath the amazing Milky Way, rising from the southeast and drifting right toward the south. If you stay still enough, I swear you can actually perceive the stars drifting, a special stillness that we don't often have opportunity to experience. The glow beneath the arch is a light dome, but from where, I'm not certain, but I believe the camera is facing more or less southeast.

Arguably the most famous arch in the world, many people sit along the natural rock ampitheatre and watch the sun's last rays kiss the 55-foot arch. Many leave, but some do not. Those of us who do not leave are often night sky photographers, willing to walk back down the 1.5 mile trail in the dark. Such was the case here. It was challenging to photograph this arch with so many photographers around, and patience is the key. I managed to click several photos of the arch with the Milky Way in the background, such as this one, facing southeast approximately. The hike back down was uneventful if slightly confusing in the dark of a moonless night.

Gazing up at Delicate Arch feels like peering into the infinite beyond, the magnificent arch acting as a portal for the center of our galaxy and beyond. For this photo, I waited a bit for the Milky Way to drift farther south, then lined it up underneath the arch for this image. I light painted the arch with a small Streamlight LED flashlight to keep the arch from going to silhouette. The Milky Way is easy to see on a moonless night such as this one.

This is along the footpath toward Landscape Arch in the Devils Garden part of Arches National Park.

Famous Landscape Arch.

Landscape Arch is in the Devils Garden section of Arches National Park. In its thinnest section the arch is only 6 feet thick, yet it supports a span of rock 290 feet long, looking extremely frail, as if it could collapse at any point. And in 1991, it did just that, a 73-foot slab of rock fell out from underneath the thinnest section of the span. A Swiss tourist caught it on video.

On June 5, 1995, a 47-foot mass of rock fell from the front of the thinnest section of the arch, followed by another 30-foot rock fall on June 21. Due to these events the Park Service has closed the loop trail that once led underneath the arch.

Devils Garden contains the the largest concentration of significant natural arches in the world. Past Landscape Arch is the Double O Arch, a 5-mile round trip, and there are other arches, including Tunnel, Pine Tree, Landscape, Wall, Partition, and Navajo, as well as Double O.

Feeling like an explorer on a new world in Arches National Park, Utah, watching the Milky Way drift toward the south as night progresses. The odd rocky formations in the distance are the rocks near the Windows Arches and Turret Arch. You can see the headlight trail of a car leaving this area. As you can see, the archway is enormous, extending up approximately 104 feet (31 m), with a span of 148 feet (45 m).

This cabin was built in 1906. Six family members slept under the roof for two years. I light painted the cabin, I used a red light to illuminate the interior to give the illusion of the family still living there.
