19 March 2014, continued - Cactus Loop Trail, Slot Canyons, Borrego Palm Canyon Trail:
Cactus Loop Trail, near Tamarisk Grove Campgrounds in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

After this very short but fascinating loop off S3 (which does not require a fee), we drove along Route 78 to the slot canyons.

Route we took.

The slot canyon involves driving along a dirt road off Route 78 for a few miles until one comes to a sudden bend to the left. It's a fascinating study in erosion, and in a few areas, is a bit of a squeeze to get past.

One of the friends I found along the slot canyons.

The Mothman of West Virginia, a long way from home.

Jawas and me.

Borrego Palm Canyon Trail

This is a popular trail that ascends up a valley to a shady oasis filled with palm trees, and was the first area protected with the creation of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, although the Park was later expanded to cover a considerably wider region. The trailhead can be reached by the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground, and requires an eight-dollar day use fee, the only trailhead that requires such a fee. This squirrel is in charge of fee collection, and is there to make certain you don't cheat the Park.

Later that evening, I went north of Christmas Circle along Borrego Springs Road to photograph the camelids.
