NAMM Music Player Network/Keyboard Corner dinner. Thank you to Dave Bryce and Mike Martin for a fantastic dinner filled with cool people. This year, Craig Anderton also joined us.

These are some photos taken with my trusty and still-functioning iPhone 6 while NAMMbulating in Anaheim Convention Center in January 2020.

This is Mike Rivers, someone I've interacted with (mostly) online since the days of newsgroups (usenet groups), where we talked about all things pro audio on rec.audio.pro. That newsgroup still continues.

Mike lives back east but has been contemplating a move to California.

My new Metal Zone guitar pedal —- for a sound larger than your sound.

I play this with my 24-foot tall stack. I can easily recreate the scene from "Back to the Future".

Briefly checking out Luna from UA, their new DAW, which looked very promising. It'll naturally seamlessly intergrate with their thunderbolt interfaces, and will have instruments and the ability to change BPM on the fly, among many other things. During my brief visit there, it did sound great, as you would expect.

I attended the MIDI 2.0 workshop, an introduction to this new implementation of MIDI. The previous MIDI was a collaboration between many major manufacturers, and is something that has lasted for 37 years since its inception, an incredible accomplishment. The new MIDI 2.0 implementation is close to being ratified. This is the description of the workshop from NAMM:

"This Friday workshop will teach you about the future of MIDI. The developers of MIDI 2.0 technology will describe the features and benefits enabled by MIDI-CI (MIDI Capability Inquiry), Profiles, Property Exchange and MIDI 2.0 protocol. This is an introductory presentation. At this session, you’ll get the answers to these questions: What features of MIDI 2.0 enable more musical expression? What features of MIDI 2.0 improve workflow? How does MIDI 2.0 protocol differ from MIDI 1.0 protocol? What will a MIDI 2.0 system look like (wiring, topology and architecture)? How will MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0 products work together as one system?"

Interesting bits include the ability for MIDI 2.0 to bi-directional communication with each other, have 16-bit detail with many things, including time, velocity, and more instead of the 127-step detail of MIDI 1. There is naturally much more than this, and it seems they have had an eye on future-proofing this, allowing that MIDI 2.0 will be able to do things that haven't even been invented or imagined yet.

Craig Anderton headed up this event, and representatives from Google, Apple, Roland, and Yamaha were there.

Back on the NAMM floor, I ran into Kaptain Rock, a missionary from The Planet Rock to save kids on the earth by teaching rock. #kaptainrock

Rocket Man, apparently an Elton John impersonator, checking out PianoArc for his first time. I was there to catch the moment in all its loopy glory.

Friday night at NAMM. Time to go get something to eat....

Saturday morning at NAMM.

Very clever.

“Neova is a MIDI controller composed of a ring and a hub. The ring recognizes your motion and sends all the information to the hub through a proprietary wireless protocol optimized for low latency. The hub embeds a charging system which allows to refill the battery of the ring. The hub can be connected to any of your favorite synthesizers or computer through MIDI or USB connector.”

The OG Mellotron.

Onde with ContinuuMini. Beautiful instrument with to resonators, effectively making the strip into an acoustic instrument.

Keyboard extraordinaire Brian Kassan explores the regions of outer space on a Hydrasynth.

Kemper Profiler, profiles your amp accurately, as well as thousands of other amps. And it’s a amp and multi-effects unit...

“Using the new Kemper Profiling Amplifier, you can create a profile of your very own amplifiers (or whatever you can get your hands on) and store it into memory. It's a true guitar preamplifier with real gain and tone knobs ready to plug into a power amp, sound system, or recording system. The real magic begins when you start shaping your tone with the Profiling Amplifier's tone controls - Kemper's high-tech wizardry makes your profiled amp respond amazingly accurately to the Profiling Amplifier's tone and gain controls. You can take an amazing amp, capture its essence, and play it back anytime with complete gain and tone control.”

Great name for a pedal. Obviously, The Mercury Seven should get this. Good quality reverb with a beautiful shimmer.

Mitchell Brown coaxes beautiful sounds from numerous modular synthesizers

Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society at The Grove in Anaheim Saturday night with Holy Wars and New Year’s Day. Great show. And as you can see, I was rather close! iPhone 6 photos.

Naturally, since I am a photographer, I take great interest in other photographers. This is a photo of one of the stage photographers taking a photo of Zakk Wylde playing guitar in the audience.

Earlier that day on the NAMM floor, checking out a Buchla. Photo courtesy of Mitch Brown.

Gus, Enrique, Patricio, and me by the Hammond booth at NAMM. This photo was taken on his birthday by Brian Kassan.

I’ve known Gus for about 20 years through Craig Anderton’s SSS forum and Music Player and FB. Gus has a great new album of passionate and romantic songs where he plays the instruments and records everything. His vocals sound phenomenal.

“Esta compilación es mi regalo de Navidad y Fin de Año y por los motivos que deseen imaginar, para mis seres queridos, mis amigos y la gente que me hace el favor de seguirme como músico, productor y tecnólogo. Creo que no hay mejor manera de ratificar que eres músico y productor, que tocando, cantando y grabándote.

Y espero que quienes se tomen unos minutos para descargar los temas o escucharlos online disfruten la experiencia.”

I am a night photographer. I drive long hours in a dusty car listening to weird music, stay out all night creating photos, get dirty, hang out with other creative sleep-deprived weirdos, see the stars drift across the sky, and always find the best taco stands. I have been exploring the Southwestern United States as well as parts of the East Coast for over six years, brandishing a camera, tripod, and colored flashlight. I especially love creating night photos of abandoned historical places, unique features, and beautiful landscapes. These are experiences that I absolutely cherish. I also currently have several books of night photography of abandoned locales that I am working on with a publisher. My images have appeared in National Geographic Books, Omni Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Westways Magazine, and many other publications.  Keep up with me at www.kenleephotography.com and social media.
