While checking out the M-Audio Venom, I bumped into Jeff Klopmeyer of Klopmeyer Communications, both of us looking around for Gus Losada, who was working at the Avid booth. |
Gus Lozada of Avid, who helped develop some of the sounds for the M-Audio Venom, and Jeff Klopmeyer. |
Yeaaaaaah!!! Photo by Jeff Klopmeyer. |
Yeah, that's right. |
I stopped by the Rupert Neve Designs booth. And hey, who showed up? Rupert Neve! |
Rupert Neve Designs had new stuff. 500 series, Portico II. Cool. I have the original Portico mic preamp and love it. It gets used at Blueberry Buddha Recording Studios quite a bit, along with the Peavey VMP-2 and FMR RNP mic preamps. |
From
Japan...the world's smallest portable record player, the
Soundwagon!
Yes, that's right, a VW van revolves around and around an LP, playing the
record. Japan once again shows it's the most highly advanced culture
on the planet.

So
Dave Bryce was working for Wave Distribution, who distribute, among many
other fantastic goodies, Cloud Ribbon Microphones and this insanely clever
device, the
Cloudlifter. This little device, which comes in a two-preamp box
as well, boosts signals for ribbon and dynamic mics by over 20dB by
utilizing incoming phantom power, keeping the signal nice and clean via JFET
circuitry. Two ways to get more info: mouse over the Cloudlifter
photo or watch the video. Dave also demonstrated the UBK Fatso, a dual channel character compressor, as they call it. By using descriptors rather than printing decibels or frequency, they've made it easy to use. Twist a knob and screw with it...it has descriptors such as "Glue" or "Spank" or "Silk" or "Smooth" or "Splat". It has character compression, tape saturation, warmth generator, and transformer coloration. This is Dave Derr's Fatso modified by UBK.

Dave Bryce, Elson Trinidad, and me at Wave Distribution at Winter NAMM 2011. I ran into Elson, who is a keyboardist and bassist. |
Later, after checking out the Korg Kronos keyboard, which has approximately 9 million sounds, many of which are dreadfully dull (but rather good for creating stock movie soundtracks), we checked out the Nord Stage 2, also being debuted at NAMM. |
Elson playing the newly unveiled Nord Stage 2. Both of us, as well as Dave Bryce, own the Nord Electro 2, which models electro-mechanical devices as well as a piano. |
Later, a bunch of us went to dinner at Buca Di Beppo on Harbor Blvd. Shown here, Philip "VegasGT3", Eric Lawson from Keyboard Magazine, and me, checking out the menu. |
Dave
Bryce with Sherri Hendrickson at Buca.
At the other table, you can also see Dan (Redkey), who generously picked up the tab for dinner. Thank you very much, Dan! |
Mike
"Gearmike" Shelton with Dave and Sherri, with Dan (RedKey) at the table
in back. Mike and I went on an Art Deco tour of downtown Los Angeles last year. |
Next
to me is Byron (SteadyB), the giant Lakers fan on Keyboard Forum. The guy in the plaid shirt is Brad Kaenel, then Eric, Byron, and I. |
Gus
and Elson. A super special thank you and shout out to Dan (RedKey) for dinner. |
Dave demonstrated his very cool 360 Panorama camera app on his iPhone. Very fun. |
Elson Trinidad wrote a good caption, so I'll steal it along with this photo here, from his camera (I can't remember who took this): Three musicians who spend a lot of time on online musician forums and Facebook: Gus "Seņor Venom" Lozada, Ken "Tulibidibidouchu" Lee and I at the Keyboard Corner dinner. (1/14/11) |
Dan "RedKey" from the Keyboard Corner forum took this photo, which I like quite a bit. Gus, me, Elson -- and by Elson's ear, the Leica compact that took most of these NAMM photos. |
Ken's photos of Nobel Peace Prize Winner Aung
San Suu Kyi, as well as photos of Peru, Burma, India, Morocco, China, Thailand,
Ghana, Ecuador, and elsewhere, have appeared in many books, magazines,
websites, and galleries. Visit the
Ken Lee Photography Website. Some of Ken's select photos may be
purchased through his
Imagekind Store. |
